Donald Eugene Stewart, 75, died March 8, at his home south of Oregon City, OR. He had severe COPD for several years following about 50 years of smoking. Don was born September 9, 1945, to Jack Robert Stewart and Clara Margaret (Johnson) Stewart in Des Moines, Iowa. He grew up on a farm just west of West Des Moines, Iowa. Don attended Waukee Community School through 10th grade when he moved with his family to Woodland, California. He graduated from Woodland High School in 1963. Don played baseball in Little League, Babe Ruth and high school. He was an excellent pitcher. He was also on the Waukee high school basketball team and played coronet in the band. Don was always adventurous, and shortly before his 15th birthday, he and classmate Phil Garland rode their bikes 185 miles in two days to Don’s grandparents’ cabin on Lost Island Lake, IA. He also rode a motorcycle back to Iowa alone at age 15, the first year he lived in California. Don served in the US Navy as a personnelman (E4) from 1965 to 1969, including 21 months in Saigon and Nha Be, Vietnam. He had a 100% VA disability for PTSD. He was always extremely proud of being a veteran, and he had no tolerance for people who faked or exaggerated their military service. Don earned an AA degree in 1970 from Sacramento City College and a BS degree in Police Science from California State University Los Angeles in 1972. He married Patricia Ann Zuniga in December 1965, and they divorced in May 1969. He married Carol Ann Christiansen in Las Vegas on March 6, 1971. They were married for 45 years until Carol’s death in 2017. Don and Carol owned and operated a liquor store in Sacramento, CA for several years before moving to Tualatin, OR. They moved to a small ranch south of Oregon City in May 1983. Don had several jobs, including sales for Hallmark Cards, Hasbro, and a law book company. Then he was a rural mail carrier for the postoffice for many years. Over his lifetime Don was a member of a Masonic Lodge, the VFW, and a veteran’s motorcycle group. He was a life-long defender of anyone he thought was being mistreated. He never backed down from opposition if he was convinced he was right. Don was preceded in death by his parents, his oldest brother, who died at birth; his son Brian Todd, who died accidentally in 1987 at age ten; a nephew, David Jeremy, who died in 2003; and his wife Carol Ann, who died of cancer in 2017. He is survived by his son Michael Sean, daughter-in-law Ahna Joy, and grandchildren Josie Faith and Trenton Brian of Mulino; his older brother Robert William (Beverly) of Greeley, CO; nephew Shawn Kristen (Courtney) of Evans, CO; his younger brother Thomas Lee of Donegal, Ireland, sister-in-law Carol Jean of Austin, TX; nephews Scott Daniel (April) of Sachse, TX and Seth Patrick (Megan) of Austin, TX; and companion/caretaker Karen Deering-Stodd. Don requested no funeral or memorial service. He will be cremated and placed next to Carol at Zion Memorial Park Cemetery, Canby .
