Obituary of Lynn Shafer
Lynn Shafer
Aug. 2, 1934 - Sept. 8, 2021
Born in Rogers, Texas to Shelby and Brucie Taylor, Lynn was soon joined by her sister Debbie.
Her dad died shortly before high school graduation, and her mom moved them from Baytown to Austin where she met the love of her life, RW "Bill" Shafer, and they wed in 1955.
She worked at the American Cancer Society to help Bill finish studies at University of Texas, and he joined the organization for a long and impactful career. Following his trajectory, she made lovely homes and friends in Texas, Colorado and Lake Oswego, developing rich relationships within the community.
In Oregon she was involved with her kid's schools, LO United Methodist Church, Women of Rotary, Garden Club, League of Women Voters, ACS fundraising, Hard Times Supper at Sunnyside Methodist and more. She hosted two Rotary Exchange students and to help the kids get through college she worked as a bookkeeper but her passions were gardening, reading, feeding Tex Mex to friends and family, legendary 4th of July parties, traveling, and Oregon Symphony.
When Lynn and Bill retired to Canby she made more friends, honed her putting skills, traveled, and was involved in Garden Club, Willamette Valley Country Club and Canby Methodist Church; baking pies every summer for the fair and making flower arrangements to share on Sundays. She also loved being Nana to three grandchildren and Super Nana to three great-grandchildren. She would reach out to anyone in need as her heart knew no boundaries, sending food and flowers to friends till the very end. Filled with grace, faith, kindness, humility and strength, she left this world better than she found it.
She lost her only son, William Bruce in 2013. She is survived by husband, Bill; daughters, Mary Lynn Ruby (John), Kristina Shafer; granddaughters, Emily Ruby Pflegl (Justin), Katherine Shafer Hoefer (Matt), Melissa Ruby Fowler (Robert);and three great-grandchildren, Kaylee and Logan Pflegl and Madison Hoefer. A celebration of life is being planned.
