Mary Kilmer-Eastman

Obituary of Mary Catherine Kilmer-Eastman

Mary was born in Long Beach California to Hayward and Catherine West, the first born identical twin of Margaret. Mary was raised in Southern California with her twin and two older brothers-Tony and Terry.

After graduation Mary moved to Oregon to attend Oregon State University. It was during this time she met Gary Piert (Zachrisson). Mary and Gary married in 1965. Later that year Michelle was born, followed by Charlie in 1967. Mary took a short break from college when the children were infants. She returned to school at Portland State University and earned her degree in 1969. Also in 1969 her marriage to Gary ended and she began a long teaching career in Gladstone. Initially she taught 4th grade at Gladstone Elementary. Soon thereafter she transitioned to Kraxberger Middle school and taught 5th and 6th grade. It was at Kraxberger she met fellow teacher Conrad Kilmer. Mary and Connie married in 1973. Mary continued her education, earning a Masters from Lewis and Clark College in 1991. Mary retired from teaching in 1999. The marriage to Connie ended in 2003. With the aid of mutual friends, Mary met Robert Eastman in 2006. Mary and Bob were married in 2008. Shortly after Bob passed away in 2017, Mary moved from her home of 40+ years in Carus to Canby to be closer to son Charlie and his family, as well as her church family at Zoar Lutheran.

Mary was a devoted mother to her children; keeping stats at Charlie's little league baseball games and hauling Michelle to horse shows. This strong desire to support eventually transitioned to her grandchildren and many knew her by her loud, cheering voice at baseball, basketball and volleyball games, swim meets, and horse and livestock shows. Everyone knew when grandma Mary was in the stands!

Mary was an avid traveler. She took frequent trips and was fortunate to visit England, Ireland, Poland, the Caribbean and Mexico.

Mary was an enthusiastic volunteer. When Michelle was still at home she was an integral part of the 4-H Leaders Association in Clackamas County at both the county and state fair horse shows. She was frequently an announcer at both events as well as the barn manager assigning stalls. From 2006 until the time of her death, Mary was a dedicated and valued team member of Love In The Name of Christ (Love INC), a furniture mission established to assist families in crisis with household furnishings.  Mary was also a member of Canby Kiwanis.

Mary is preceded in death by her parents Hayward and Catherine West, brothers Tony and Terry West, sister Margaret Combs, grandson Austin Piert and great grandchildren, twins Simon and Macie Adelman.

Mary is survived by daughter Michelle Tummonds, son-in-law John, son Charlie and daughter-in-law Debbie Piert; grandchildren Brittany (Nathan) Adelman, Brianna Basey, Brock Piert and Bryn Tummonds; great grandchildren Addisyn Basey, Jacob, Joanna, Jillian and Joel Adelman.
